Ian’s Update January 2015

Annual General Meeting:

This was held in November and the Group reported another successful year with high membership and extensive work being carried out in the HQ Grounds.  We thanked Committee members Andrew and Maria Taylor who have now stood down from their roles after several years service, and welcomed Laura Besenzi and Tim Porter as new committee members.

The leaders reported a fantastic summary of activities that had taken place during the year.

Finally the 2014 Firework Display was another great success with a sell-out crowd which raised £6500 to Group funds.

We are currently seeking leaders to help run the Tuesday Cub Pack.  If you are interested in playing a vital voluntary role in the local community then please get in touch for further details.

News from the Beaver Scouts:

It’s amazing what you can pack in to 24 hours on a Beaver sleepover even in the face of a thunderstorm!

In October we invested a new Assistant Leader (Sue Elmes as ‘Mussels’) played parachute and relay games, hiked over 2 miles (from Taverham to Horsford), did a road sign spotter trail en route, created boats out of natural materials and floated them on Thorpe Marriot pond. Once we arrived at Horsford, the Beavers designed their own signs, listened to stories, decorated cookies, created and trialled go karts out of recycled items, put up tents, popped planets and had space hopper relay races all in the theme of ‘Round and Around’! The only dampener was the arrival of torrential rain which put paid to the campfire!

14 Taverham Beavers (& 1 Cub) joined 10 Beavers from 1st Horsford & St Faiths and survived the night in their tents (indoors). They all went home tired but happy, armed with a camp blanket on which to sew the first of hopefully many camp badges.

Grateful thanks to Danny Draper (Griffin), Beaver Scout Leader at Horsford for having us, and to all the adults and Alex, our Young Leader, who helped make this such a super experience for everyone.

Arrival at Horsford- hoorah!

The following weekend I accompanied 6 of the 9 Beavers who achieved their Bronze Award at the Celebration of Scouting Achievement Awards Ceremony. This is the moment when all the commitment and hard work of the young people and their Leaders is celebrated by the District in front of a large audience of proud parents! Congratulations to all!

Finally, on behalf of all at 1st Taverham Scout Group may we wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and prosperous 2015.

Scouts:

The Scouts have had a great Summer finishing with a week long camp at NORJAM, the Norfolk International Scout Jamboree. As usual Taverham walked from the Scout Hut to the Showground and made a impression on arrival dressed in our Roman costumes pulling 2 gold Roman chariots. The week was action packed with activities, trips and meeting Scouts from all over the world, including Thailand, Austria and Israel. The Scouts rose to the challenge of the trading up challenge; Scouts were given 1 tea bag to see what they could trade up too, and we were very impressed with the results, the best being a 2kg bag of pasta, lots of sweets and much much more!

Norjam 2014

After the summer break we are now back and have lots planned including a debate night, trips to Quasar, ten bin bowling and climbing, all before Christmas. Don’t forget the fireworks display where the Scouts will have a charity cake bake stall, all goods baked by the Scouts!

Northern Norwich  District held a leaders Master @ ARMS competition at the 18th Norwich HQ in which Taverham were runners up in the Archery competition!

The team consisted of leaders from all sections of the group. (Beavers Penny Butler, Cubs Mark Card, Scouts, Francis Addington and Graham Edmunds).

Beaver Scouts:

Following a very successful summer term, (during which older Beavers joined with other Beavers and Cubs at a District Transition Camp at Reepham Scout HQ),  I am proud to report that 9 Beavers have achieved their Chief Scouts Bronze Award. They celebrated this superb achievement at the Celebration of Scouting Achievements Awards Ceremony on 17th Oct. Well done to them all!

The Beavers have been having lots of fun already this term and getting outside whilst there is still sufficient light. We are benefitting already from improvement work in the grounds and are enjoying outside games, sessions on the assault course, campfires and planting activities, which the Beavers all rate very highly. We are very grateful to all those involved with the grounds management, who are giving up their time to do this, and help make Scouting so much more adventurous and exciting for the young people.

Coming up are a District trip to Holt Country Park, a visit from the Master Composters (plus worms!!!) and a joint sleepover with Horsford Beavers, so lots to plan and look forward to.

We warmly welcome a new Assistant Leader, Sue Elmes who takes the place of Steve Butler who has moved on up to be the new Cub Leader.

Cub Scouts:

Stephen Butler took over from Graham Edmunds as Akela of Monday Night (Waingunga) Cubs in September.  We have welcomed new cubs to keep the pack at 24, and Toby Barnes as Assistant Cub Scout Leader (Baloo).  Stephen is very fortunate to have the continued support of 3 young leaders (Alex, Fraser and Luke) and Tamsin Larwood.  It is very early days, but we have already been into the HQ grounds to enjoy the assault course, have learned about recycling, and given the new members of the pack a brief introduction to scouting worldwide.

Coming up we will be looking at the 1st World War and Remembrance Sunday.

Ian’s Update August 2014

Group  Joining List – We are able to temporarily re-open the list.  This can be accessed by clicking here and completing the relevant online form.  Membership starts at 6 years old with Beaver Scouts.

All sections have been enjoying the good weather and getting outside. The Beavers have had an introduction to fire lighting and their first taste of campfire smores! (chocolate biscuit & melted marshmallow sandwich!)

The Cubs have been working towards two new badges (Fire Safety & Backwoods Cooking) and the Scouts have been launching water rockets 40ft into the air!

All sections have been preparing for their summer camps:-

  • The older Beavers and younger Cubs went to a District camp at Reepham on the 27/28th June.
  • The two Cub packs had a joint camp at 2nd Hellesdon on the 11/12/13th July with 30 Cubs attending!
  • The Scouts are preparing for NORJAM the Norfolk Scout Jamboree at the Showground during the week of 9 – 16th August.

Toby Barnes has joined the leadership team as Assistant Leader for Monday Cubs. Toby who recently moved to Taverham comes with a Scouting background as his parents were members of the 1st Wells Scout Group – welcome Toby.

Leaders James Wilson and Frances Addington have recently gained their shooting permits so the group now has five leaders able to run air rifle target shooting.

Fraser Rudd & Luke Edmunds (Young Leaders) have gained their Younger Leader belt (YL equivalent to the Adult Wood badge training qualification) – congratulations Fraser.

Adult Support

Reminder that we are still seeking more adults to volunteer to help run our sections.

It would be fantastic to be able to re-open our 2nd Beaver Scout Colony so that boys and girls aged 6-8 can start their Scouting and learn the vast array of practical and social skills on offer.

If you are aged 18 or over, with a desire to do something and put support back into the community then please get in touch.  Taverham Scout Group reaches it’s 50th birthday in 2015 and literally ‘000s of children have passed through the Group in that time.

Don’t worry if you have no experience – full support and training is provided and all adults are subject to DBS(CRB) checks.

It would be fantastic in the new term to open a 2nd colony and increase capacity to over 120 children in the area.

If you or someone you know wants to play a part in helping the next generation then please contact me.

Meanwhile we hope you enjoy your summer holidays and we look forward to a new term and Scouting year in September!

Ian’s Update June 2014

Adult Support – Your choice

You will have read over recent months that we have children in Taverham who would love to join Scouting in the village and develop as responsible members of the community.  Scouting in Taverham starts at 6 years old until 14 years when children have the opportunity to move to District based Explorer Scouts and beyond, including leadership.

Sadly the only reason these children cannot join is shortage of adult support.

Ian’s Update March 2014

Simple as that! Subscriptions are paid £13 per quarter.  If you would like to support the Scouts fundraising this way then please get in touch.

Another way is through Newspaper recycling – We have a skip at the HQ and all proceeds from this are used for Scouting in Taverham.  Rather than sling papers in your grey bin why not bring to the Scout HQ?  It is open most evenings during the week (term time) and all day on a Tuesday and Thursday.

Ian’s Update January 2014

A Happy New Year to all readers!

November was, as usual, a busy month with our annual fireworks night at the Scout HQ and Remembrance Sunday parade at Taverham Church. Both were well attended and the fireworks night was a great success raising £6000 for Scouting in Taverham.

As many of you will have seen or heard, this year’s display was not without incident as a tree uprooted during the early part of the evening as the crowds were building.  Although there were a few minor injuries, the excellent work of the St. John Ambulance, helpers and paramedics ensured that all were able to continue their evening at the event which, although delayed, concluded in full. The Group has been at the premises for nearly 50 years and for 2-3 hours a year we have our firework night. The odds of a tree to fall in that ‘slot’ makes you wonder if I should have brought a lottery ticket that night.

Members of the public present also helped in managing the situation and on behalf of the Group can I thank those involved and also to those people who send kind messages of support and thanks on how the incident was dealt with.

The AGM was held in November during which AV presentations were made by leaders showing the amazing time had by the children during the year, ranging from camps and climbing to rafting and shooting. We welcome parents Anthony Bayliss and Andrew Savage to the Group Committee and thank Angela Butler and Martin Jeffs who will now form part of the Active Support Unit we are forming.

During the meeting, Treasurer John Wilson was presented with the Chief Scout’s 10 year service award and Ian Colman with 30 years’ service award with 1st Taverham.

Sadly, although the leaders and committee members new and old witnessed the presentations made by the section leaders, despite having 100 children in the Group, no other parents turned up.

We can only assume that we must hold the event at an inconvenient time so we will need to review this for next year.

Taverham Active Support Unit

There is just one thing holding back Scouting, not just in Taverham but across the country. We have children wanting to join but we cannot take them. Why? Because we need more adults to help run sections, manage the HQ building and the Grounds and help raise funds. Scouting is provided by volunteers from a wide range of experiences and ages.

We need more people.

The Active Support Unit is part of this. Adults belong as members of the Taverham Scout Group. There is no regular commitment but a willingness to support the Group how they can: Fundraising events, Camps, some section meetings such as night hikes, HQ maintenance, Grounds maintenance and so on. We get no funding other than from subs or fundraising or sub-letting our HQ. Without volunteers we cannot do the work nor raise the funds which means increasing membership subs. If you are interested in supporting Taverham Scout Group as a member of the Active Support Unit then please get in touch.

Vacancy – Minutes Secretary

Having completed more than 11 years in the role, Maria Taylor has retired from the role as Group Secretary and joined the ‘back benches’ of the Group Committee. We need to appoint someone who is prepared to attend 5 meetings a year, take and produce the minutes. There is also occasional correspondence but most of this is done directly by individuals. If you would like to join the Group Committee and take the role as Secretary then please get in touch NOW!!!

Finally:

Taverham Scout Group would like to record the sad passing of Bob Tyler, a stalwart of the Taverham Community. Bob was the founder Group Scout Leader of 1st Taverham back in 1965, a role also held over nearly 50 years by Ken Adcock, Dan Gentle, Ian Colman, Linda Blackwell, David Cousins and Pam Sizer. Our thoughts and best wishes go to Judy and family and as we approach the Group’s 50th anniversary in 2015, it is clear the foundations set by Bob many years ago still hold firm today and with the 100’s of children that have been part of Scouting in Taverham.

Ian’s Update December 2013

Firstly news from the youngest members of the group – the Beavers!

The Beavers in Sandy Colony have been very busy learning new skills and applying their Beaver Promise to everyday life. You may have seen them getting out and about having lots of fun, but also helping do their bit in our local community. Just before the Taverham Fayre, much fun was had on the playing field  armed with litter pickers and plastic bags. Every scrap of litter was removed, even those hiding in the surrounding bushes!

Taverham Woodland volunteers also had 16 extra little helpers to plant spring bulbs in Ghost HIll woods and the Beavers were surprised to discover there be crocodiles lurking in the undergrowth!

They’ve also hiked along the Marriot’s Way, been on a Shipwrecked sleepover on the banks of the River Wensum and enjoyed participating in District and County Fun days.

We are proud to report that Jack Harley, Harry Wesson & Toby Thurston are the first Beavers to have achieved the top award for Beaver Scouts (the Chief Scout’s Bronze Award), since we took over leadership in February.

We thank all those parents who have helped us with our meetings, especially Jo Baldry & Mark Thurston, who are now fully invested members of the leadership team.

Penny & Steve Butler, 1st Taverham Scouts

At the time of writing the annual firework display is about to take place and we will give a report on this and also Remembrance Sunday parade and the AGM in next month’s magazine.

We hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and a big thanks once again to all those who have supported Scouting in Taverham.
