Ian’s Update August 2016

We still have a large waiting list of over 80 youngsters. We are in the process of welcoming some more new members into the group from the list (4 Beavers, 5 Cubs & 9 Scouts) but this will only make a small dent into the list.

Beavers is running very well under the Leadership of Mark Thurston. Mark, with the help of Penny and Sue, is running a good programme and they are giving the Beavers lots of opportunities to experience and learn new things. Recently they have been on a hike around Taverham and started to learn about camp fires! This month they are going on a cycle ride and going to the district Beaver camp.

Dave Cousins has taken over Monday Cubs and is now supported by Jo Baldry who has changed roles from Beaver colony assistant. The Waingunga cubs have recently completed their athletics badge. This month they are having a joint pack meeting with Seeonee cubs building dens in Horsford Woods.

Tuesday Cubs are looking to increase its numbers to 20. Like Monday cubs they have also been doing their athletics badge. They have been learning to light fires with flints and learning about fire safety.

Scouts – The new Scout leadership team led by James and supported by Mark Card, Oliver Card and Julian Flatt is running very well. The Scouts have a really packed programme with lots of opportunities for the Scouts. They have recently been to Derbyshire for some hillwalking and had a survival camp down the HQ. This month they are also going to the District Water Activities Mayhem at Decoy broad.

News:

The Beavers have enjoyed a trip to the Spixworth Panto, been busy learning how to look after their pets with a visit to Pets at Home.

They are now looking at global issues and have enjoyed our visit from Jane representing the GATE charity who they will be raising money for.

Not only is this an exciting year as Taverham Scouts mark their 50th anniversary, Beavers also turn 30 and we are looking forward to the Beavers 30th Birthday Party and other special events coming up!

Leaders:

We are still in need of more adults willing to help with the Group and provide activities for the youngsters.  We have to turn children away from having the chance to enjoy Scouting simply because of lack of adults.

If you are over 18 and want to give something back to the children then get in touch.  We have a great opportunity to develop the next generation.  If you can help then please get in touch.

Ian’s Update January 2016

animated-happy-new-year-gold-flash

17 Cubs from both the Monday and Tuesday night packs attended a district swimming event at Victory Pool, North Walsham in mid-November.  All the Cubs who attended completed their stage 1 swimmer badge, with 3 Cubs (Xander, Samuel & George) going on to complete all 11 elements of the stage 2 swimmer badge, including swimming 100m non-stop and treading water for 3 minutes.  Well done to all involved.

Both packs went to the New Taverham Players Panto of Jack and the Beanstalk at the end of November, for a bit of pre-Christmas fun!

Our annual fireworks evening was as busy as ever with over £7000 being raised for funds.  A big thanks to all those who supported.

Annual General Meeting:

This was held in November and the Group reported on a busy but challenging year with a great amount of work carried out on the grounds and leaders working hard to provide the fabulous activities for the children.  Our biggest challenge is adult support mainly to provide the week to week activities for the children.  We also said thank’s to John Wilson who after 12 years is handing over the treasurer role to Tim Porter, and welcomed Dan Fordham to the Executive Committee. Chairman Ian Colman is retiring as Group Chairman but staying on the Executive Committee. A successor will be appointed in due course.

Ian’s Update August 2015

We have recently been trying to recruit more leaders to support those currently providing a fantastic range of activities for our youngsters. Sadly, to date, we have been unsuccessful and as a result, not only are we unable to take youngsters from the waiting list, we are also looking at the possibility of having to close one of our cub packs.

It would be a tragedy at any time to have to take such action but as Taverham Scout Group marks 50 years of Scouting in Taverham, it makes this even harder.

Many hundreds of boys and more recently girls have benefitted immensely from Scouting and it has played a massive impact on developing and shaping lives – sticking to traditional values and mixing new and old activities from camping and cooking on fires, to digital media and latest technology.

Below is an extract from the letter to parents. If anyone aged 18 or over would like to add to our leadership team and experience the fun and enjoyment of Scouting then please get in touch for a chat. Whilst we have leaders who help and support new recruits, this is an ideal time to give some of YOUR time to the next generation……

‘’Dear Parents

As you may be aware, during 2014 and more actively during 2015 we have been advertising for additional help to support our Leadership team, especially the Cub Section.

There were two main reasons for us advertising for additional Leaders:

  1. Scouting in Taverham is very popular and our waiting list has enough children on it to support two Cub Packs and an additional Beaver Colony
  2. One of our experienced Cub Leaders, Dave has decided to step down from his current role.

Dave was aware of the impact his decision would have on the children and the Group so kindly agreed to stay on for a little longer to enable us to source support; this has ended up being six months longer than intentionally planned.

Unfortunately, and sadly for the children, all our advertising and discussions with those who made enquiries has not been successful. This has now placed us in a position in which a difficult decision has had to be made with regards to our Tuesday Cub Pack.

It is with regret that I am writing to inform you that, unless a suitable Leader is found between now and November, our Tuesday Cub Pack will be closing at the end of 2015. This decision has not been taken lightly as I am sure you will realise it will have a significant impact on our Beaver Colony and current waiting list.

For those children in Beavers the impact will be that a progression to Cubs will no longer be guaranteed. Our only remaining Cub Pack (Mondays) will not be able to provide places for all the youngsters who finish Beavers nor to any new children who arrive in the area of Cub age. Every effort is being made to accommodate as many children as possible and parents will be informed of places or changes to waiting lists during the remaining months of the current term.’’

Waste Paper:

After many years of collecting newspapers for recycling, the Group no longer undertakes this with the falling prices and increased use of Grey bins.  May we thank all those who have supported this fundraiser over the best part of 50 years!

Ian’s Update June 2015

Green cross code 006

Since the Easter holidays, the Beavers have been learning more about safety, this time focussing on how to cross roads and railways safely. Beavers managed to practice their Green Cross code skills across Sandy Lane under the watchful eyes & encouragement of our local PCSOs.

Tree planting 005Beavers have also been busy planting trees in the Scout grounds. They are working in partnership with the Woodland Trust (who supplied us with 210 trees last year), Taverham Woodland volunteers (lending gloves, gardening tools and helping dig holes) and members of the Group Executive (who have been clearing areas for planting). Some of these trees were potted up in March 2014 and went home with Beavers to be looked after… Amazingly half of them have returned- alive and sprouting!

Some of these Beavers have since moved on to Cubs so they were invited to join in with the current Beavers to plant their trees. Grateful thanks to all those who have supported this venture so far.

St George parade (6)On Sunday 26th April, 8 Beavers, 8 Cubs and 1 Young Leader took part in the St George’s Day service in Norwich city, parading with hundreds of other Scouts from the Northern Norwich District. During the service the Beaver Leader (Penny Butler) was presented with her wood badge in front of dignitaries including the Lord Mayor of Norwich.

Ian’s Update April 2015

So far this term the Beavers in Sandy Colony have been working on the new Communicator badge, learning how to make phone calls, send text messages and use codes to communicate. They also had a visit from the local PCSO to learn about ‘Staying safe among strangers’ which contributes towards their Safety badge.

During half term, 8 Beavers attended the Spixworth Panto (Oh, yes they did! – Ed.) with many other Beavers from the District, and took audience participation very seriously!

The Scouts have been completing sections of the ‘Promise Challenge’ this term so far with learning how to deal with disabilities such as blindness. They have also been working on teamwork and leadership with the Patrol Leaders running some of the meetings.

7 new entrants joined after Christmas with 6 from Cubs and 1 Scout who had moved down from Manchester.

After half term we will be running several weeks for the fitness challenge and also Master at Arms, with rifles, Pistols and hopefully some archery too!

A weekend trip to Derbyshire has been booked for the end of April and the Troop is off to Gilwell Park, the home of Scouting for the first week of the school holidays.
